Cat Exposed to Rabid Raccoon Captured and Euthanized

August 9, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Chesterfield County Animal Control officers were called to a home in the 13800 block of Winterberry Ridge today after the owner of a cat injured last week in an encounter with a rabid raccoon reported that the cat had returned home.

In accordance with state law, the cat was euthanized as a result of being an unvaccinated animal that was directly exposed to a rabid animal. The only other option would have been a strict, six-month quarantine. However, the cat had sustained severe injuries from its fight with the raccoon, which was an additional reason for euthanasia. All safety precautions were taken when handling the cat and Animal Control officers are not aware of any additional exposures.
Animal Control officers stress that all cats and dogs are required to have current rabies vaccinations to protect them, their owners, other animals and the public
