Celebrate the Fourth with Fun and Fireworks Chesterfield County

The Chesterfield County Fourth of July Celebration will be Monday, July 4, at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with the fireworks display beginning at dark. This year will feature a special activity area for kids and family-friendly entertainment. Blankets and lawn chairs are recommended. Alcohol, glass bottles, pets and personal fireworks are prohibited. Please note that this is a very popular event, and limited parking is available. Roads leading to the fairgrounds will close at 9 p.m., or when parking lots are full.

This event is being sponsored by the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation. The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds are located at 10300 Courthouse Road, across from L.C. Bird High School. For details, call Meghan Coates at 804-796-7045.

For more than 20 years Chesterfield County, with the help of many corporate and individual sponsors, has conducted numerous events that have made Chesterfield County the region’s leader in annual Black History Month celebrations.

This year, the county will sponsor a program that includes lectures, African dance, puppet shows and storytelling.

“Chesterfield County is proud to have commemorated Black History Month for the past 22 years with a wide variety of programs and events. We deeply value the rich heritage and contributions of African Americans to our community and our nation. It is because of our diversity that Chesterfield County is a First Choice community for people of all ethnic backgrounds,” said County Administrator James J. L. Stegmaier.

“The Storyteller” presented by Dylan Pritchett – Explore African and African-American culture through stories, games, music and audience participation. Registration is recommended and begins on January 15.

Barefoot Puppet Theatre – Traditional West African stories are brought to life through the use of expressive rod puppets, original music, and puns. Registration is recommended and begins on Jan. 22.

Christmas Celebrations at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Adults aged 50 and older are invited to get into the holiday spirit with a trip to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Tuesday, Dec. 7. Enjoy a guided tour of the conservatory and eat a buffet dinner in the Robin’s Room restaurant. After dinner, explore the annual lights display, Gardenfest of Lights. The show features more than 500,000 lights arranged in botanical themes throughout the garden and conservatory.

After leaving Lewis Ginter, the bus will travel downtown to see the famous lights display at the James Center. Time permitting, a quick stop may also be made at the Jefferson Hotel to see their signature Christmas tree and giant gingerbread house.

The tour is $93 per person, and includes entry to all displays, dinner, and round-trip transportation. The bus will depart from the Target in Chester at 3 p.m., returning at 10 p.m., and at Chippenham Hospital at 3:30 p.m., returning at 9:30 p.m.

Annual Bluegrass Festival Sept. 16-19 at Chesterfield County Fairgrounds

Celebrate bluegrass music at the Annual Bluegrass Festival and Virginia State Bluegrass Championship Contest, Sept. 16-19, at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds, 10300 Courthouse Road. The four-day event includes performances by Big Country, the McPeak Brothers, Remington Ryde, Code Blue, and Shenandoah Drive, as well as a potluck dinner on Thursday, Sept. 16. On Saturday, Sept. 18, enjoy the Hall of Fame induction celebration. The Bluegrass Championship Contest will be held on Sunday, Sept.19, and will award a $1,000 grand prize to the first-place band.

Family Fun Day To Benefit The Starlight Midatlantic Organization

Family Fun Day is the 1st annual fundraising event that will be held at RISE, to benefit the Starlight Foundation. It will be held Sunday, August 23 from 1 pm – 5 pm. This event will allow for families to come to our Indoor Facility and spend the afternoon enjoying activities such as Moon Bounces, Rock Climbing Wall, Carnival Games, Arts & Crafts, Face painting,and even a performance by Jonathan the Juggler!! There will also be vendor tables for area businesses to set up and display their products and services. All proceeds from this even twill go to ensure that Starlight is able to continue to provide the greatly needed programs and functions to families who truly appreciate and need them.
