Obituary for Wallie Hoyt “Shorty” Matthews Jr.

MATTHEWS, Wallie Hoyt Jr. “Shorty”, 86, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday December 23, 2009. He is survived by his son, Richard H. Matthews and his wife, Gayle W. Matthews; grandsons, Christopher R. Matthews and Brandon W. Matthews, all of Chesapeake, Va. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Gladys P. Matthews. Mr. Matthews served his country in the 8th Air Force during WW II. He was a very valued member of Glen Allen Masonic Lodge, #131 A.F. & A.M. and Glen Allen American Legion Post 244, a founding member of Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a longtime member of Lakeside Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., with a Masonic Service beginning at 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m.Tuesday at Lakeside Baptist Church, 7401 Woodman Rd., Richmond, Va. 23228. Military honors and interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lakeside Baptist Church.
